for our son’s dear friends

lost their home
just last month to
California-Oregon

border’s Slater fire.
They escaped with lives
(barely) but zilch else.

These folks helped
my family by looking
after place in Happy Camp

a few years ago
while were continents away
-- and we all think

the world of them.
I've never met a group
that knows how

to do more with less.
Built most modest house
with own hands.

Grew plus foraged food.
Even sewed clothes on remote
property bit up South Fork.

When embers came raging
down, ran through flames
to edge of Indian Creek

where stayed two days with
nothing but what’s in backpacks
-- except one surviving cat.
