Duo Kahlos

by Jonathan Memmert

"The Two Fridas" (1939) by Frida Kahlo

(on seeing The Two Fridas painting by Frida Kahlo)

Always two hearts
beat as one in split selves,

dual depictions dressed, dos Fridas, posed side by side,
on her a known heart, on her a yet to be known heart,

one heart that pumps
one heart that revives

both necessary to bring back
shattered life from the abyss,

time grasps each hand
of her other mirrored self,

fingers sense real is still alive,
transfused back and forth,

as we traverse artery through valve through aorta,
as we sit on earth, breathe in sky, our pulse exposed.
